  • Did China Nix North Korea's J-10 Request?
Posted by Robert Wall 8:01 AM on Jun 17, 2010

South Korean media says North Korea's Dear Leader -- Kim Jung-Il -- asked China for J-10s fighters during his recent visit there, but was rebuffed. The Chosen Ilbo speculates the rejection of the deal by Beijing may be why Kim departed China early.

If true, it could be another sign of deteriorating relations between the neighbors, not least made visible by a recent incident when, apparently, a North Korean border guard shot and killed three persons across the border in China.

China's possible move, coupled with Russia's decision to at least temporarily walk away from the sale of S-300 air defense systems to Iran, marks a brief success for non-proliferation efforts, but how long the momentum will last is questionable.
