  • Iran Touts 'New' Missile
Posted by Robert Wall 8:18 AM on Aug 24, 2011

Iran has announced it has developed several new weapon systems in what is merely the latest in a series of such statements made in recent months.

Official state media tout the latest projects, unveiled in the presence of the country's leader, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as breakthroughs for the country's defense industry. With a sanctions regime in place, Tehran has been trying to make the case it can build up its weapons capabilities despite those restrictions.

But looking at the images provided by the state media, such as the Qader cruise missile image, described as a 200-km-range weapon, there may be less there than claimed.

The weapon appears to be little more than a copy of the Chinese C-802 missile long known to be in Iranian inventory.

At the event, a "new" torpedo and engine were also shown.
