The fighters from the Polish air force's 1st Tactical Squadron will patrol Baltic airspace for four months. They relieve four French Mirage 2000s at Siauliai air base in Lithuania which have conducted the mission for the first four months of this year. The Polish contingent number 100 personnel, including eight pilots.

This is the third time Polish MiG-29s have been deployed to Siauliai, following three-month missions in January-March 2006 and March-June 2008. The only other Soviet era aircraft to perform the mission were MiG-21 Lancers in August-October 2007.
