The German air force is due to receive the first of its upgraded Tornado strike fighters mid-year.
Cassidian, which is upgrading the aircraft, says the first production Tornado with the ASSTA 3.0 package is now in flight trials. ASSTA 3.0
The enhancement will allow the Luftwaffe to use laser-JDAM bombs from the interdiction aircraft. It also adds Link-16 functionality and new communications equipment, and a digital video and voice recorder.
Also in work is development of the next iteration of the ASSTA upgrade series, the 3.1 package. It will equip the aircraft -- due to remain in service more than a decade -- with color screens, further Link-16 functionality, and other features.
