The administration’s plan for detailing how it would implement a potential $1 trillion federal budget cut that could take place in January was due today. Delays of this kind are so routine, it might be more newsworthy if the government submitted on time its plan to cope with the budget penalty known as sequestration. But the election season is in full swing, and Republicans are pouncing. The chairman of the House Armed Services Committee says the hold-up means the president wants sequestration to apply to defense. “The President’s continued silence on sequestration is disappointing. I can only conclude that President Obama wants to impose cuts his own secretary of defense has called catastrophic,” said Rep. Buck McKeon (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. “His administration proposed the sequester trigger in the first place and he is on record subordinating this crisis to his own political prospects. What other reason could he have for delaying a report that makes the consequences of sequestration as clear as possible?”
