It will be the second time the Luftwaffe will conduct the NATO air policing mission in Iceland, which dates back to May 2008 following the withdrawal of US F-15s from the Atlantic island nation two years earlier.
France was the first nation to conduct the mission with Mirage 2000s and was followed by rotations of Canadian, Danish, Norwegian and US aircraft.

Jagdgeschwader 71 conducted the last German rotation with six F-4Fs June
    1-25 2010.
