  • Germany Nears Anti-Piracy Operation
Posted by Robert Wall 10:00 AM on Dec 11, 2008

The German government has agreed to participate in the European anti-piracy mission off the coast of Somalia.

Up to 1,400 troops will be part of the mission, the cabinet determined yesterday. Germany will also contribute one frigate. Germany's parliament still has to support the cabinet's ruling, but a green light from there is expected.

The European mission, called Operation Atalanta, began formally on December 8 and has its operational headquarters in Northwood, England. The goal is to ensure humanitarian aid makes it to Somalia and isn't diverted by the seaborne terrorists.
