A Belgian F-16 crashed yesterday while approaching Kleine-Brogel air base to land after a training flight. The control tower noticed flames at the rear of the aircraft, which crashed a kilometer away from the air base's runway. The pilot managed to eject from the aircraft and was not harmed. A crash investigation is underway but the pilot indicated to the control tower before the crash that it could have been a bird strike. The Belgian armed forces report a dozen bird strikes a year. The crash leaves the Belgian air force with 59 F-16A/B MLU aircraft, six of which are in storage (what the Belgian air force refers to as "cocooning").
