The U.S. Fifth Fleet is organizing its first International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX) in its area of responsibility on 16-27 September, with the participation of over 20 nations from the Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East and North America. Consisting of an international symposium in Bahrain and a series of exercises in international waters in the Persian/Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman and Gulf of Aden, IMCMEX 2012 will be the largest of its kind ever in the region.

IMCMEX 12 aims to promote interoperability among air, sea and undersea mine countermeasures platforms, as well as in areas such as logistics, maritime assistance and coordination with commercial shipping. Forces from the participating nations will include minesweeping and minehunting ships, helicopters, underwater vehicles, command and support ships, and naval dive platoons for mine detection and disposal. For example, the Netherlands will participate with two diving teams, a Remote Environmental Monitoring System (REMUS) and remotely operated vehicles.
