  • Minotaur V Soars Above Manhattan
Posted by Jen DiMascio 9:22 PM on Sep 09, 2013

The recent launch of Orbital Sciences's Minotaur V rocket from Wallops Island, Va., was visible up and down the East Coast – including from Manhattan.

Ben Cooper, who shoots for Aviation Week, purchased a tourist ticket for the elevator ride to the top of Rockefeller Center and snagged this photo using a time-lapsed camera. Ben has been snapping shots of NASA launches since a scuttled shuttle attempt in 1999. As he says on his web site, the Empire State Building was lit green and blue for the U.S. Open tennis tournament. The rocket sent NASA’s Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer off on a 100-day mission to orbit the moon in search of atmospheric dust, reports AvWeek’s Frank Morring.
