Piedmont Aircraft has signed a deal to take over the operational control of the aircraft maintenance operation at Moore County Airport (SOP) at Pinehurst/Southern Pines, N.C. The facility, which had been operated by the airport authority, will be rebranded to Piedmont Aircraft Services. Piedmont CEO Tom Mekis says the move makes “strategic sense” for Piedmont, which traditionally has been involved in aircraft sales and management. “In the course of our aircraft sales and management business we need to have numerous aircraft inspections conducted that we have always had to outsource,” Mekis says. “We now have our own in-house facility to conduct some of these inspections.” Piedmont plans to the facility’s capabilities, which has primarily focused on piston-powered aircraft, to include turbine-powered aircraft as well. Mike Weeks, was named vice president of Piedmont Aircraft Services and will lead the expansion. Piedmont says the move into maintenance was part of a growth plan that the company has had since its inception.
