Aireon Selects ITT Exelis for Space-Based ADS-B

ITT Exelis has been awarded a $42 million contract by Aireon to provide the automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast data-processing and distribution component for its global space-based air traffic surveillance system. Aireon, a joint venture between Iridium Communications and Nav Canada, will take advantage of the hosted payload space on Iridium NEXT, Iridium’s second-generation satellite constellation, to enable fully global and continuous space-based monitoring and control of aircraft. Exelis will design and build the data-processing and distribution platform, a critical component of the Aireon system, and will operate and maintain the system for 15 years from first launch.

Nexcelle Has Panache in Paris

An innovative thrust-reverser concept developed by Nexcelle for new, integrated propulsion systems is being shown here by Safran (Aircelle), which is one of its two parent companies. The thrust-reverser configuration was validated using the full-scale PANACHE (pylon and nacelle advanced configuration for high efficiency) demonstrator, which received the 2013 Safran corporate Innovation Grand Prize and is featured at Safran’s display. A key element of the thrust-reverser configuration is a one-piece composite O-duct, which replaces the two-piece D-doors on a traditional thrust reverser. It benefits from reduced weight, while also eliminating the D-doors’ bifurcation in the flow path – increasing the thrust reverser’s efficiency.

P&W Extends Agreement With All Nippon

All Nippon Airways (ANA) has signed an eight-year extension to its exclusive parts-repair agreement with Pratt & Whitney to continue support of the airline’s fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft powered by PW4000 engines. The repair work will be performed throughout P&W’s worldwide network of parts-repair facilities in support of ANA’s fleet of PW4074 and PW4090 engines. “ANA has a long history of proactive fleet management, and is very serious about controlling costs while maintaining the highest level of reliability and operational excellence,” said Jerry Tarnacki, VP of services for Pratt & Whitney. “We are pleased to provide ANA with these valuable benefits under a long-term agreement.”
