AgustaWestland is using its experience gained from the development of an urgent operational requirement for the U.K. to offer an upgraded engine for operators of the Lynx helicopter.
In 2008, the helicopter manufacturer was given a contract to upgrade 23 of the British army’s Lynx AH9 helicopters to the AH9A standard with the Light Helicopter Turbine Engine Company (LHTEC) T800 turboshaft engine — produced by a joint venture of Rolls-Royce and Honeywell. The engine, developed initially for the canceled RAH-66 Comanche, was found to give the Lynx better hot-and-high performance in Afghanistan.
Now the company is looking to offer the upgrade to operators of the Lynx naval helicopter.
AgustaWestland developed a version of the naval Lynx with the T800 engine, known as the Super Lynx 300, and the engine has also been used in the new AW159 Wildcat now in service with the British army. But large numbers are still equipped with the Rolls-Royce Gem turboshaft, and AgustaWestland is proposing re-engining Gem-equipped aircraft to some customers.
