Indian state-run defense company Bharat Electronics Ltd. (BEL) and Elop Ltd., a subsidiary of Israel’s Elbit Systems, have entered into a joint venture agreement to produce a surveillance system for naval helicopters.
The two sides signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Aero India show in the southern city of Bengaluru for combined production of the Compact Multi Purpose Advance Stabilization System (Compass).
Compass is a day-and-night surveillance system that includes a color daylight camera, third-generation 3-5 µm FLIR sensor, laser target designator and rangefinder, and automatic tracking capabilities, along with command and control capabilities, according to H.N. Ramakrishna, BEL’s marketing director.
BEL recently completed technology transfers to allow the indigenous production of Compass in India. It will provide Indian users with local production and maintenance support. Compass has already been chosen and installed in India’s Advanced Light Helicopter.
